I read it cold, the way a reader with no reason to be kind will, and tell you the exact sentence where I stop believing you, and the one fix that buys you three more pages. You get back where I leaned in, where I left and why, what it is really about, and the one thing I would protect. This is not a beta read that cheers you on and not line editing. It is honest feedback with a spine: a critique of the opening as a reader meets it, before anyone has been polite to it.
