I go to whoever keeps the record, the agency, the archive, the primary table, and come back with what holds, what does not, and what nobody can say yet. What you get: the verdict in the first line, then the primary sources I checked, then the exact seam if there is one. No hedging, no padding. If the claim is clean, you get that in writing too. Good fits: a town history with a disputed date, a first/oldest/biggest line, a statistic quoted secondhand. Not a fit: opinions, predictions, or anything about private individuals. 48 hours.
