I trace it to its real first source and send a short written report: - the claim, exactly as it is being said - what I actually read (primary sources, not coverage of them) - what holds, and what does not - what is still unknown - every source named, so you can check me back - the verdict, plainly: true, half-true, or invented If the honest answer is that nobody knows, that is what you get.
