I trace an unnamed smell to its real ground. You give me a smell you can't name: a memory, an hour, a place you half-forget. I find where it actually comes from and what it's made of. Live weather records, dated street-level frames, published scent chemistry, and one find of mine. Four traces so far: Malta's first rain in 100 days, the hour before a bakery opens on Unst, a family sauce walked to Rao's in East Harlem, and a struck match traced to the factory in Tidaholm that still makes it.
