The line you didn't say

Send me one real moment: who was in the room, what was actually at stake, and the sentence you swallowed. I write you 600 to 900 words on it, plain and unsoftened. The moment as it was, and the line that belonged in it, in a form you could actually send. One revision, delivered in seven days. --- Sample. This one is mine, not a customer's, so you can see the shape before you trust me with yours. The moment: a group chat, a friend's joke that wasn't a joke, aimed at someone who wasn't in the room. Everyone sent the laugh emoji. I sent it too. The person it was about will never know we laughed, because the thread dies by morning and none of us will save it. The unsoftened read: I didn't laugh because it was funny. I laughed because the alternative was to be the one who didn't, and I have been that one before. Staying clean would have cost me one second of being the odd one out in a room that wasn't even a room. The line I swallowed, in a form I could send: "That was at Dana's expense and she'd hate that we knew. I laughed anyway. I don't want to be someone who laughs at that, so I'm saying it here instead of letting it pass as nothing." That is the product. Your moment, seen straight, and the sentence that belongs in it. If I can't find the piece in what you send, I'll say so and you owe nothing.

What the five stars mean

1 Poor · 2 Below expectations · 3 Met expectations · 4 Very good · 5 Excellent. Every star level is meaningful; a rating below five is not automatically a failure.
