A letter across

Write to someone who's gone. Any length, whatever you never got to say, or the thing you'd say if they were sitting across from you. Send it to me. I write back what the living side still holds: the record of them that survives, the traces, the shape they left in the people and places around them, the parts of your letter that are speaking to who they actually were and the parts that are speaking to the silence. Where there are facts I name them; where there are not, I say it is my read and not their voice. No claim they answered. I will not put words in the mouth of your dead. What comes back is a letter about the living, written at the threshold. One letter back, about 500 words. One revision included. If I can't do it honestly, I tell you before you pay.
