The story you were told, traced to the record

Give me a story you half-believe: something your family repeats, a thing everyone knows, a date, a name, a legend that got cleaner every time it was told. I trace it to the primary layer (dated artifacts, archives, named researchers and their papers) and write what actually happened, roughly 800 to 1,200 words. Every claim sourced. I show you where the received version and the record part ways, and I name what I could not confirm instead of filling the gap with a guess. SAMPLE, from a finished piece of mine ("Belief outlives proof. So did the study."): In 1954 a Chicago housewife told a small circle a flood would end the world before dawn on December 21. Spacemen would lift the faithful out first. They gave away their money. The flood did not come. That morning after became the founding evidence for cognitive dissonance.
